I started with radios in the early 80s and then into ham radio there are a lot of people who did the same thing, now its more interesting playing and experimenting with aerials. The one thing that keeps the enjoyment going is the thought of all the new friends I am making, every time I use my radio and talk to some one.
If there are any budding Amateur Radio opperators out there that need to know who to talk too then there are a number of clubs around just look them up on the web you can find the list on http://www.rsgb.org.uk/ Just look under Your Local Info.
And good luck and injoy.
At the moment I am using a Kenwood TS2000, Yaesu ft857 through a full size G5RV plus a 2/6/70cms Co linear and mobil I use Yaesu ft857 with atsa 120a
